Tony Stewart, driven by Landon Cassill, won Saturday's first race of the 2011 Nationwide Series at Daytona International Speedway. He beat his rival, Clint Bowyer, barely.
The margin of victory of 0007 seconds is the tightest in the history of the series on the famous superovale.
"Landon pushed me and pushed again and again and he really did a super good job. We had plenty of pace I've never looked back, "said the winner of the last four editions of the first race of the season, six in seven events.
Bowyer held the lead in the race at the restart with six laps to go. "I knew there was a possibility that Tony will leave with the victory, but I never thought it would in this way [with Landon]," he laughed.
"On second thought, I should have stayed ahead of him. I might be able to win that way, "said one who faced his teammate in this context since both cars were from garages Kevin Harvick Inc..
Cassill, who reached the finish in third place aboard a Chevrolet owned by James Finch was worried before the start of the race, which he had virtually no experience on a superovale, aboard the Nationwide car.
"It was a very intense day because we did not used the suction tests, I had never done this before. I had to learn how to behave in the race in this situation, "said Cassill.
Danica Patrick has led a few laps behind Bowyer with her before losing ground and finished 14th, his best result of today's date, in the Nationwide Series.
The original driver JR Fitzpatrick Ontario, for his part was ranked 42nd, having never played in only 10 laps on Saturday.
