Hybrid supercar Porsche 918 Spyder adapted for racing RSR - Detroit 2011





Porsche has introduced at the Detroit Motor Show, hybrid racing car built in the style supercar 918 Spyder, which was first shown at the Motor Show in Geneva last year. This machine, which received the name prefix RSR, will be used as a test prototype to explore the possibility of further use of hybrid power systems in motorsports. Car Racing Porsche 918 RSR has a body made of reinforced plastic and carbon fiber hybrid, combining a 563-horsepower eight-cylinder engine with direct fuel injection (red zone in his starts at around 10,300 revolutions per minute), two electric motors (one for each wheel on the front axle) to 75 kilowatts each, and six-speed gearbox with paddle-shift stages petals.

In addition, the right side of car on the passenger side is the flywheel, which "collects" the kinetic energy during braking. Once accumulated sufficient "charge" pilot pushing a button on the steering wheel can be about eight seconds to use electric motors on the front axle, increasing thus the total capacity of the powerplant to 767 hp.

"Citizens" Porsche 918 Spyder supercar is already approved leadership of German companies to launch into a series. Earlier it was reported that work on the engineering of this model will be completed by the end of 2010 and early this year, producers announced technical and dynamic characteristics of the machine, and also to determine the price. According to preliminary information, the new product will be released a limited edition. The cost of each copy will be about 500,000 euros.

Note that previously, Porsche also introduced a hybrid race car, built on the 911. This machine is equipped similar to the 918 RSR engine: four-liter six-cylinder boxer capacity of 480 horsepower and two electric motors that drive the movement of the front wheels. This car took part in last season in a marathon 24 Hours Nürburgring, as well as in the American Le Mans Series.
